Here’s your opportunity to own a remarkable piece of Gallagher Guitar history.

This one-of-a-kind instrument is the original prototype for the Shelby Folk re-issue, a guitar inspired by the very beginning of the Gallagher story.

In 1963, long before Gallagher Guitars earned its reputation for handcrafted excellence, J.W. Gallagher was a respected furniture maker in Wartrace, Tennessee, building custom cabinetry and fine Queen Anne-style furniture. That same year, an unexpected opportunity would change the course of his life.

Bill Conner of nearby Shelbyville approached J.W. with an ambitious project: help design and build guitars for a new venture backed by the Slingerland Drum Company. Slingerland president Henry “Bud” Slingerland had envisioned expanding into the growing catalog guitar market after collaborating with Conner on manufacturing equipment, and he needed a skilled craftsman to bring the idea to life.

Although J.W. had never built a guitar before, he embraced the challenge with the same precision and determination that defined his woodworking. With no instructional books, online resources, or specialized lutherie suppliers available, he carefully studied existing guitars, measuring every component and reverse engineering their construction. Through patience, craftsmanship, and ingenuity, the first Shelby guitars were born.

Those early instruments were humble, affordable guitars, but they marked the beginning of a legacy that would eventually become Gallagher Guitars.

Today, that story continues with the Shelby Folk model. Designed to honor those pioneering beginnings while reflecting Gallagher’s enduring commitment to craftsmanship, the Shelby Folk pays tribute to where it all started.

This prototype represents more than a guitar. It is the first expression of a model that celebrates Gallagher’s origins and a rare opportunity to own a truly significant piece of the company’s history.  “Prototype” is stamped on the top of the headstock.  Even though we were happy with the sound of this guitar, we made the decision to return to the original shape of the Shelby Folk and thus indeed this is a one-of-a-kind instrument.
